caffeine and pinheads

the clocks hands are crossing the midnight tower
seconds droop on each other like heavy steam in a shower
as time passes, her arms open wider, but for a few minutes
she’ll close up, fold in, sometimes it feels like she takes hours
to settle in, and push my eyelids down, as i try to keep
my eyes open, avoiding sleep – but the sound of her lips,
tsk-tsk, tsk-tsk –
pricks holes the size of pinheads into the night,
light grows dull as my brain grips for caffeine near
the edge of my mind, i fight it off,
another crossing of the arms of time
