skulls on fire

candles, magicians of the night
set their skulls on fire
they frighten shadows, sending
them with their drooping capes
across my bed in an uneven, drunken,
flight – but the wind from outside has his
sights on her – she melts,
fighting against prince charming’s
whispers as he steps through the window –
he bites too hard, too strong, she grows cold –
now there’s no more light to hold
the hearts of shadows before they fold,
melting away into the dark
