belonging

if only the words we speak to attempt
to reach the hearts of others
could truly reflect our own –
but our words are merely small parts
of our souls that remain
concealed and incomplete
yet exposed completely to all the pain

we need others to make
ourselves whole, which is why we
feel weak, when vulnerability
sneaks up out of the hole, the cave
in which we keep our insecurities alive
and whispers of confidence asleep

tiptoeing around the corners of our thoughts,
wearing down our minds and spirits,
we become uneasy if we stare too
long at one another, when we try to
find the words to heal the wrongs,
we can’t determine what to say because
we don’t really want to hear it,

but those thorns rake across
our loss of torn strength and time, we
struggle to believe we belong
and simply say
everything’s fine
